Merle Haggard Returns with “That’s The Way Love Goes” Redone

Merle Haggard was renowned for his exceptional ability to cover classic songs, and his rendition of “That’s the Way Love Goes” is a prime example. Originally written in 1973 by the legendary Lefty Frizzell and songwriter Sanger D. Shafer, the song was first brought to life by Johnny Rodriguez. Featured in Rodriguez’s album “All I Ever Meant to Do was Sing,” it soared to the top of the US charts and made its mark on the Canadian chart as well. This initial success set the stage for the song’s enduring popularity.

In 1983, a decade after its first recording, Merle Haggard introduced his own version of “That’s the Way Love Goes” in his thirty-eighth album, also titled “That’s the Way Love Goes.” Haggard’s cover was a triumph, clinching the number one spot on both the US and Canadian charts. Beyond chart success, the album itself reached number eight on the US Billboard chart, and Haggard’s performance earned him the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1984. This accolade further cemented Haggard’s reputation as a masterful interpreter of classic country songs.

The song’s journey didn’t end with Haggard, as it was covered by various artists over the years. In 1974, Connie Smith recorded it for her album of the same name, and even Lefty Frizzell, one of the song’s original creators, covered it. In a notable collaboration in 1999, Haggard teamed up with Jewel to record a new version of “That’s the Way Love Goes.” This duet was released as a single and achieved a respectable position on the Billboard country chart, peaking at number fifty-six.

The collaboration between Jewel and Merle Haggard was part of a larger project. They worked together on Haggard’s album “Merle Haggard: For the Record,” which featured forty-three songs, including some re-recorded hits with various artists. Notable guest artists included Willie Nelson, Brooks and Dunn, Alabama, and others. Among the tracks they recorded were “Silver Wings” and “That’s the Way Love Goes.” This partnership was highlighted in a memorable live performance at the 1999 CMA Awards show, showcasing the enduring appeal of “That’s the Way Love Goes” and Haggard’s skill in bringing new life to classic tunes.
